A low blow for Mexican sport
The news came like a bucket of cold water. World Aquatics, the international federation, canceled the Diving World Cup that was going to be in Guadalajara. The reason: the security situation after the operation that ended the life of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, ‘El Mencho’.
Immediately, the atmosphere was filled with uncertainty. This competition is key in the world calendar. Removing it from the circuit is a hard blow for our athletes, who lose an essential platform for Los Angeles 2028.
Rommel Pacheco comes into play
After hours of silence, Rommel Pacheco, head of Conade, spoke. The exclavadista did not stay with his arms crossed.
“Given the announcement by World Aquatics about the Diving World Cup, we are still in negotiations for it to be held in Jalisco,” he wrote on his networks.
But not only that. Pacheco is already moving pieces to save what can be saved. Mexico City, Veracruz and Yucatán are the alternatives it uses so that the event is not completely lost.
“We work because sport is one of the ways in which we transform the lives of Mexicans,” he closed his message.
The timing couldn’t be worse. Figures such as Osmar Olvera, Gaby Agúndez and the Cueva twins were going to compete in Guadalajara. Athletes who need these scenarios to polish their preparation heading to China and then to LA28.
The most worrying thing goes beyond the specific event. This sends a terrible signal about how we are viewed internationally. And the worst thing: it deprives our divers of a golden opportunity to measure themselves at home.
Now it’s time to row against the current. The management of Pacheco and his team will be key. Because in sport, as in life, it’s not just about falling… but about how you get up.
