Without Pulisic, USA beats Australia and advances in the World Cup

The United States secured their place in the round of 16 by beating Australia 2-0 without Christian Pulisic.

A victory that secures classification

The United States achieved its second victory in Group D of the World Cup by beating Australia 2-0 at Lumen Field in Seattle. The victory, achieved without its star Christian Pulisic, gives it a pass to the round of 16 with two rounds played.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team was able to adapt to the absence of Pulisic, who missed the game due to a calf injury. It was the first time that the Americans advanced to the direct elimination phase after just two games.

The scoring opened early. In the 11th minute, Folarin Balogun sent in a cross from the left that Australian defender Cameron Burgess deflected into his own goal. It was the second consecutive own goal that benefited the United States in the tournament.

Alex Freeman, the youngest player on the team at 21 years old and son of former NFL player Antonio Freeman, extended the lead in the 43rd minute. He headed in a deflected shot from Sergiño Dest, and the goal was confirmed after video review.

Australia, which had just beaten Turkey, tried to react in the second half. Coach Tony Popovic brought on Nestory Irankunda and Cristian Volpato, who resigned from Italy to represent the Socceroos. Volpato had a chance but finished high.

The game became more physical towards the end. Four yellow cards were handed out in the final minutes. The United States managed the advantage and let the clock run.

With six points, the United States leads the group. Australia is left with three. The next matchday, on Thursday, will face Turkey at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, while Australia will clash against Paraguay in San Francisco Bay.

Defining duel in Group K

Colombia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo meet tonight at the Guadalajara Stadium, with their sights set on the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup. The match corresponds to Matchday 2 of Group K and starts at 8:00 p.m.

Los Cafeteros arrive with confidence after beating Uzbekistan 3-1 in their debut. Now they are looking to secure their place in the next round. On the African side, the Leopards are coming off a historic draw against Portugal, their first point in the history of the tournament.

Congo had only participated in Germany 1974, when it was Zaire. On that occasion they lost all three games without scoring a goal and conceded 14. Today they dream of a memorable performance.

Portugal’s 5-0 win over Uzbekistan forces both teams to add three if they want to fight for first place in the group. The goal difference is tight, but second place is also at stake.

The match will be broadcast on Channel 5, Azteca 7, TUDN and ViX Premium. Colombia and Congo dispute this Tuesday, June 23, a key step towards the next instance.

Alexis Vega supports possible opportunity for Ochoa in the Tricolor

Alexis Vega opens the door for Memo Ochoa against the Czech Republic, despite the ownership of Raúl Rangel.

The Mexican National Team has already secured its place in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup. With two victories against South Africa and South Korea, Javier Aguirre’s team arrives relaxed for the duel against the Czech Republic.

Raúl Rangel has earned the title in goal. His performance against South Korea confirmed him as the main goalkeeper. However, in the locker room they do not see it as a bad thing that Guillermo Ochoa receives minutes.

“It would be something extraordinary, something great for Memo. For me he is a legend of Mexican soccer and the National Team. He is a player who has always been available,” declared Alexis Vega.

The Toluca Red Devils forward supported the possibility of the experienced goalkeeper playing. “The Vasco will make the decision and whoever it is will do it in the best way,” he added.

Vega also pointed out that everyone is prepared: “We still don’t know how the team is going to end up, but I think everyone is ready for an opportunity.”

Ochoa has not missed a World Cup since Germany 2006, but he has only added minutes in three editions: Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. Against the Czech Republic it could be his fourth participation if Aguirre decides.

Curiously, in South Africa 2010 it was ‘Vasco’ himself who benched Ochoa to give the then experienced Óscar ‘Conejo’ Pérez the title. History now repeats itself with a similar context: Mexico already classified and a veteran goalkeeper looking for minutes.
