Vingegaard sets the tone in the team time trial
Tadej Pogacar began his quest for a fifth Tour de France title on Saturday, but it was his rival Jonas Vingegaard who took the early lead. The Dane and his Visma-Lease a Bike team set the fastest time in the 19.6 km team time trial in Barcelona, gaining a 12-second advantage over Pogacar and his UAE Team Emirates -XRG.
“Obviously it’s still a long Tour, but it’s a perfect start,” said Vingegaard. “My team did an incredible job today. They were very strong. I didn’t have to do much, they just carried me to the finish line.”
The first of 21 stages ran along the Mediterranean coast, passing by the Sagrada Familia and ending in a short climb with views of the tourist destination.
Pogacar is the big favorite, with victories in 2020, 2021, 2024 and 2025. He aspires to equal Merckx, Indurain, Anquetil and Hinault with five titles. “Of course you always aim for victory, but I think we did a really good time trial,” said the Slovenian.
Vingegaard, winner in 2022 and 2023, accelerated on the final climb. His team celebrated the victory. “To wear the yellow jersey again after a few years without it is nice,” he commented.
This was the first team time trial since 2019, with one adjustment: now each rider has their individual time, allowing the team to shed the tired ones.
Filippo Ganna (INEOS) was second at 8 seconds, Juan Ayuso fourth at 0:16, Remco Evenepoel at 0:19. Frenchman Paul Seixas, 19, was tenth at 0:39.
The race will cross the Pyrenees in stage 3. Stages 19 and 20 culminate in Alpe d’Huez, before the final stage in Paris.
