The theater of misinformation
Jenaro Villamil, the man in charge of the Public Broadcasting System, came out this Tuesday to deny a rumor that was already circulating like wildfire. That President Claudia Sheinbaum had given him a good wake-up call for the Infodemia fiasco? He flatly denies it.
The controversy, you know, broke out when the government initiative spread that a video of a woman sunbathing in the National Palace was artificial intelligence. Spoiler: it wasn’t. It was a huge mistake.
Defence and rectification
When leaving a meeting with Sheinbaum, Villamil put on the journalist’s shirt to justify the stumble. He said that as soon as they had the elements, they rectified them. “That is done in journalism all the time,” he stated, making it clear that he maintains his position at the helm of Infodemia.
But here comes the dramatic twist. Without showing evidence, he launched an accusation against Ricardo Salinas Pliego. He assured that the businessman’s entire network was in charge of amplifying the matter, magnifying the controversy.
“The entire group has been in charge of magnifying the matter,” Villamil stated.
Meanwhile, on another stage – La Mañanera – President Sheinbaum confirmed the obvious: the video was real. He clarified that sunbathing in the National Palace is not prohibited per se, but the heritage must be respected. The person in the video, yes, has already been sanctioned.
This is how this act remains: a recognized error, a published rectification and crossed accusations. The political theater continues its course, with the truth as a backdrop.
