The underground of CDMX got fed up and opened up: the drama of a truck that did not see the abyss coming
Just when we thought the universe had given us enough material for the weekend, with the drama of social media and the desperate search for something to stream, Mexico City decided to raise the level of its own urban soap opera. This Friday, in one more episode of “What will the earth swallow today?”, a sinkhole of epic dimensions made its stellar debut in the Periférico Oriente, near the Casa Blanca neighborhood in Iztapalapa. It was not just any hole, it was a declaration of principles of the capital’s subsoil: 10 meters deep, 10 long and 12 wide. Basically, big enough for a cargo truck carrying several tons of tile to decide to take an abrupt, impromptu break.
Imagine the scene: the traffic is flowing (or rather, moving at 5 km/h, as is tradition), suddenly, the asphalt just… gives up. He gives up. He says “not today.” And just at that moment, a truck that was passing by the place loading construction material becomes the involuntary protagonist of the most viral geological event of the day. Fortunately, and for a change in this type of tragedies that taste like déjà vu, no injuries were reported. The driver, surely, in addition to the scare of his life, now has an unbeatable anecdote for family gatherings.
The official response: the mayor and the anti-chaos squad arrived
Faced with this collapse of literal reality, it didn’t take long for emergency teams to appear. The mayor of Iztapalapa, Aleida Alavez, arrived at the scene along with Civil Protection teams, Urban Services and Auxiliary Police. Their mission: to cordon off the area, assess the damage and try to contain the disaster, which, by the way, already had vehicular traffic in true chaos in the direction of Cuemanco. The usual recommendation: use alternative routes. Because, what would a road collapse in CDMX be without the suggestion of taking routes that, secretly, we all know are also full?
This incident is nothing more than an uncomfortable reminder of the structural problems lurking beneath our feet. A combination of old pipes, water leaks, and an infrastructure that sometimes seems to be held together by hope and gum. Each sinkhole is a cry from the underground crying out for us to pay attention. And although the authorities are working on containment efforts, the question on everyone’s mind is: when will the next time the street simply decides to open?
Meanwhile, we citizens arm ourselves with patience and traffic apps, avoiding holes and potholes as if it were a video game in survival mode. Because living in the capital is that: a constant exercise in resilience, memes and finding the ironic side of a truck ending up half-buried in the middle of the expressway. City life never ceases to surprise, and today, once again, it reminds us that the true adventure terrain is right under our tires.
