The total crisis: Tottenham arrives at Anfield on the brink of the abyss
Look, this hurts to write. The Spurs’ numbers are not bad, they are historic. Six defeats in a row for the first time in 144 years. Eleven games without winning in the Premier League, another negative record. And the interim coach, Igor Tudor, started with four defeats in four games.
“It feels like things could hardly get any worse”
But be careful, they can. This Sunday they travel to Anfield to face an always voracious Liverpool at home. And they do it in pieces.
A team destroyed and without confidence
The injured list is something to cry about: Maddison, Kulusevski, Kudus, Bentancur, Udogie… And if that were not enough, captain Romero and Palhinha clashed heads against Atlético and are a doubt. Van de Ven is suspended.
Then there’s the goalkeeper mess. Vicario was so weak that Tudor removed him from the team. He put on Kinsky… who lasted 17 minutes before being replaced for his mistakes. Now Vicario will probably return, but in what spirit?
The reality is stark: Spurs are just one point away from the relegation zone. West Ham and Nottingham Forest play earlier this weekend. By the time they take to the Anfield pitch, they could be in the hole.
Tudor is still in charge, at least this weekend. Then comes the return against Atlético. And then… well, then the only objective could be to save the category. Incredible for a team that won the Europa League last season.
The game is pure survival. We will see what character this team has left.
