For the first time, all the screens in Times Square in New York went out for a few seconds. It happened this Thursday, as part of the celebrations for the tenth anniversary of Pokémon Go.
A decade of catching Pokémon
The blackout recreated the video game’s biggest move: hundreds of trainers synchronized their devices to defeat Mega Mewtwo. The scene recalled the original 2016 promo, which showed a massive raid on the famous New York square.
The moment went viral on social networks. The screenshots showed attendees with their cell phones raised, coordinating the action with the help of the screens in the area.
“To all the Trainers who have been part of this journey: Thank you. For the friendships, adventures, discoveries and memories (…) We are grateful to celebrate 10 incredible years and we can’t wait to see what the future holds,” reads the game’s official accounts.
The event included a musical surprise by the Los Angeles duo Loud Luxury. Its presentation kicked off Pokémon Go Fest 2026, a global celebration with special activities in several countries.
