Global passion without borders
On Thursday, 67,442 people packed the Atlanta stadium to watch the match between the Czech Republic and South Africa. Many did not have a favorite team. They simply wanted to experience the World Cup.
Rami Abdoch and the Abdurhman brothers arrived from Memphis, Tennessee. They wore shirts from Argentina, Spain and South Africa. For them, the tournament captures global diversity.
“We love all the teams. The energy, the diversity and the love for one sport is unmatched,” said Abdoch.
On the other side of the stadium, Jonathan Arango traveled from South Carolina with his wife, daughter and father. They are Colombians, but attending the World Cup without their team was a lifelong dream.
There were also international travelers. Brothers Octavio and Diego Ochoa flew from Guadalajara to Boston and then to Atlanta. They plan to continue to Philadelphia.
Diego explained that tickets in Mexico cost up to 100,000 pesos (almost $6,000), while in Atlanta they paid $150.
“We prefer to travel and watch the games. It’s much cheaper,” he said.
The match ended 1-1. The fans came out with their faces lit up, eager for their next destination. For Octavio, it was a unique and unbeatable experience.
