The prosecution asks: Who dropped the crane… and the ball?
Ah, the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City, that institution that always appears *right after* the tragedy to ask itself: “How the hell did this happen?”. The owner, Bertha Alcalde, with that seriousness that only comes from the position (or the weight of someone else’s guilt), reported that they are investigating two obvious things: how the crane that killed the photographers Berenice Giles and Miguel Ángel Hernández was installed (spoiler: badly), and who or who decided that the safety regulations were just decorative suggestions.
The distribution of blame: a work game of thrones
Because, of course, in these cases you always have to distribute responsibilities as if they were candy in a piñata. According to the prosecutor, there are three groups in the crosshairs: those who operated the machinery (who, apparently, confused “install” with “improvise”), the organizers of the event (who surely thought that “civil protection” was the name of a rock band) and, of course, the authorities, those ethereal figures who are always “supervising”… from far, far away.
The best thing is that the prosecutor did not specify who exactly is under scrutiny. Is it to avoid hurting people’s sensitivities? Or because they don’t even know who should do what? Mysteries of bureaucracy.
Of course, the Mayor assured that there is progress in the investigation (read: they already have some papers and testimonies, but they still haven’t found the person who said “that’s okay”). He promised speed and justice, two words that, in these cases, usually rhyme with “slowness” and “impunity”. But hey, at least they offered psychological support to the families… because nothing cures pain like therapy paid for by the State.
Moral? If you ever see a crane at an event, run. Run like your life depends on it (because apparently it does).
