The great night of magical constancies
Because nothing says “democracy in action” like handing out “I won just because” certificates at midnight, the INE organized its own version of the legal Oscars. Between lights, cameras and an audience made up of family members who were probably only there for the catering, nine lucky people received their golden pass to the SCJN. Who said judicial elections aren’t exciting?
Polyglot speech and other acts of political circus
Hugo Aguilar, the brand new Minister President (yes, with capital letters, because the position deserves it), opened his speech in Mixtec, because what better way to demonstrate pluralism than to say two sentences in the native language before continuing in Spanish. “Thanks to the INE, to the citizens, to my dog and to the universe”, seemed to be the summary of his emotional speech, which included the classic “this is a historic moment” (spoiler: all moments are historical when you are in front of a microphone).
Among the winners were also the ministers Lenia Batres, Yasmín Esquivel and Loretta Ortiz, sitting together as in a strange version of “The Three Musketeers” but with togas. Completing the cast are María Estela Ríos, Sara Irene Herrerías, Giovanni Figueroa, Irving Espinosa and Arístides Rodríguez, whose names we will surely remember… until the next judicial scandal.
The most ironic thing of all is that the event was held after validating an election where, coincidentally, everyone who should have won… won. What a surprise! The INE, like a good arbitrator, fulfilled its role of delivering certificates with the solemnity of a notary distributing inheritances. Of course, no one mentioned how many votes there were in total or if anyone brought confetti.
And now what? Well, let’s wait for September, when these nine chosen ones will swear (or promise, or cross their fingers) to apply justice with “legal pluralism” and “full access to justice”. Meanwhile, we citizens will continue believing in the magic of records… or at least pretending that we do.
