The INE is getting its act together (or at least that’s what it says)
Guadalupe Taddei Zavala, the president advisor of the National Electoral Institute (or “the INE” for the folks), announced with great fanfare that, for the first time in history, the counting of votes for the judicial elections will begin… on the same day as the vote! Yes, as you hear it. There will be no wait until the following Wednesday, like in the old days when the INE worked at the pace of a bureaucratic tortoise. Now, according to them, everything will be faster than a viral meme.
And how does this benefit us?
Well, according to Mrs. Taddei (who must have an invisible watch because she talks about exact times), between 11:30 p.m. and 11:40 p.m. on June 1, the INE will release the first percentage of progress. Of course, he clarifies with a look of “don’t get me wrong”: “It’s not a PREP, it’s not a quick count, it’s a definitive count”. In other words, it is the electoral version of “yes, yes, I already checked it three times.”
But here comes the best: citizens will be able to observe in real time how the calculations progress. As? Well, going to the INE offices, of course. Because nothing says “transparency” like having to physically move into a government building to see numbers on a screen. Of course, election observers may be there, ensuring that no one takes a souvenir urn. “Let’s not lose sight of the fact that citizens do accompany this process,” says Taddei, as if we didn’t know that half of the country will be more interested in the national team match than in the judicial results.
And meanwhile, the electoral packages will travel to the 300 district capitals as if they were Amazon packages on Hot Sale day. Will they arrive on time? Will there be any “strays”? Who knows. But at least this time the INE promises that they will not make us wait a week to find out who won, which is already progress… or a miracle.
