Analysis of the increase in the cost of the iPhone due to tariffs
The price of the iPhone in the United States could experience a significant increase in the coming months, with estimates reaching up to 88% in some models. According to recent analysis, the most advanced version of the device, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, could cost $2,300, compared to its current price of $1,599. This scenario arises as a direct consequence of the tariffs imposed by the US government on imports from China, a measure implemented on April 2 during the administration of President Trump.
Breakdown of economic factors
According to reports from the New York Post, supported by international trade experts, the total margin of the tariff increase amounts to 54% for products manufactured in China, the country where the majority of Apple devices are assembled. Although the components of the iPhone come from various regions of the world, final assembly in Chinese territory subjects it to these tariffs.
A specific example is the iPhone 16 Pro (256 GB): the cost of its parts would go from $550 to approximately $820 due to the taxes. If Apple decides to pass this increase on to consumers, sales prices would suffer drastic adjustments:
- Basic iPhone 16: from $799 to $1,500 (+88%).
- iPhone 16 Pro Max (with 6.9-inch screen and 1 TB of storage): from $1,599 to $2,300 (+44%).
These calculations reflect not only the impact of trade policies on the global economy, but also how geopolitical tensions directly affect the technology sector and consumers.
