A night of celebration turned into tragedy
The iconic Jet Set club in Santo Domingo, a place frequented by artists, athletes and prominent personalities, became the scene of one of the worst catastrophes in the history of the Dominican Republic. During a lively merengue concert, the roof of the establishment collapsed without warning, leaving a tragic death toll of more than 113 and 255 injured.
Heroes in the midst of chaos
Rescue teams, including international brigades from Puerto Rico and Israel, worked tirelessly to locate survivors in the rubble. Juan Manuel Méndez, director of emergency operations, declared with determination: “As long as they point out that there is a missing person, we will be here.” Solidarity was present, while family and friends joined in prayer and singing outside the place.
Among the victims are emblematic figures such as merengue singer Rubby Pérez, MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel and Governor Nelsy Cruz, who even alerted the president from under the rubble. Each story reflects the magnitude of this collective loss.
A call for unity and hope
While authorities investigate the causes of the collapse, the Dominican community once again demonstrates its strength. Hospitals, forensic institutes and volunteers work tirelessly to identify victims and support those affected. Daniel Rivera, former Minister of Health, summed up the feelings of many: “It is a lot of pain, but you have to be patient.”
