When health and money are mixed in a box
Ah, television dramas. Nothing like a good schism between colleagues to keep the entertainment world entertained. This time, the protagonist is the legendary (and now controversial) José Ramón Fernández, who, after years of relative peace at ESPN, has returned to the spotlight thanks to a friendly exchange of accusations with his former teammate David Faitelson. The theme? Nothing less than an alleged cocaine addiction in his glory days on TV Azteca. Because, of course, in sports journalism the important thing is not football, but locker room gossip.
The day the table turned (literally)
But let’s get to the heart of the matter: the departure of Joserra from TV Azteca. According to the official version, it was all due to his health problems. And boy did he have them. The man came from covering the 2006 World Cup in Germany with diverticula that sent him straight to the operating room. His triumphant return? A faint in the middle of the program because, according to him, the debate table spinned like a merry-go-round. Side effects of anesthesia? Too many hours of streaming? Or just the universe telling you “dude, realize”? Who knows, but the fact is that Ricardo Salinas Pliego, the television mogul, decided it was time to give him a break… or something like that.
And here comes the best: the liquidation. Instead of a check or a bank transfer (how boring), Joserra received a box full of bills. Yes, like in narco movies, but without the suspense that the DEA is behind it. According to the journalist himself, Salinas told him: “This is not Azteca’s, this is mine, I’ll give it to you.” Generosity? Blame? Or simply a millionaire’s whim? Fernández, with the wisdom that comes from experience, decided to keep the money “in a box on the bed” (because, obviously, we all have a box on the bed for these emergencies). Of course, he couldn’t help but say that the phrase that accompanied the gift was “macropendejo”. What exactly did it say? He took that to the grave… or at least to ESPN.
Plot or simple corporate fatigue?
To top it all off, Joserra assures that everything was a “plot” against him. Because, of course, on television no one leaves for natural reasons: there are always conspiracies, betrayals and, if you’re lucky, the odd mysterious envelope. The truth is that, after leaving TV Azteca, the host found refuge at ESPN, where he has been without television fainting for more than a decade (that we know of). Of course, the controversies, as we see, follow him like a shadow.
So now you know: if one day you are offered a settlement in cash and at a till, think twice. Or at least find a good place to store it. Under the mattress? In the freezer? The options are endless.
