Two active storms in the Pacific
Tropical Storm Cristina formed on Monday off the coast of Nicaragua, the United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported. It has maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h and is located 160 km west-southwest of Managua.
Cristina is expected to leave between 10 and 20 cm of rain, with accumulations of up to 30 cm, in coastal areas of Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala until Thursday.
At the same time, tropical storm Boris was located 135 km southeast of Acapulco, with winds of 65 km/h and moving slowly toward the northeast. It would cause rainfall of 10 to 25 cm in Guerrero and Oaxaca, and would make landfall on Tuesday.
“These rains can cause life-threatening flooding and landslides, especially in areas of steep terrain,” the NHC warned.
There is a tropical storm warning from Laguna de Chacahua, Oaxaca, to Tecpan de Galeana, Guerrero, with conditions expected in 24 hours.
Boris is the second named storm of the Pacific season, which began on May 15. The first was Amanda, on June 3, without threatening land. In the Atlantic, the season began on June 1 but no cyclones have yet formed.
