What happened to Fernando Gago?
A concern shook Chilean football. Fernando Gago, technical director of Universidad de Chile, required emergency medical attention after the 2-0 victory over O’Higgins. It was the match that closed the first half of the tournament.
The Argentine strategist, 40, presented a cardiovascular complication after the match at the National Stadium in Santiago. He was transferred to a hospital for a specialized evaluation.
Although the episode worried fans and the club, the institution was the one who issued the official information. Without giving in-depth details, they confirmed that Gago is stable and under medical supervision.
The diagnosis and measures of the club
Through a statement, the University of Chile indicated that Gago is undergoing various cardiovascular examinations and will not direct training in the coming days. The former soccer player remains accompanied by the medical team, which monitors his evolution.
“We inform that our technical director, Fernando Gago, is undergoing a series of cardiovascular tests and will not be in charge of training today,” the club indicated on social networks.
They added that the former coach of Chivas, Racing Club and Boca Juniors “is in good condition and is accompanied by our medical team.”
The incident occurred hours after a key victory. With those three points, the blue squad rose to third place with 24 points, two behind Universidad Católica and 12 behind the leader Colo Colo.
Despite the situation, Gago managed to give the post-match press conference. However, subsequent studies determined to keep it under observation.
For this reason, he will not be in the next Copa Chile match against Santiago Wanderers. His place will be temporarily taken by his technical assistant, Fabricio Coloccini.
