Last minute delay
The South African men’s team was due to travel to Mexico on Sunday to prepare for the World Cup that starts in eleven days. However, visa problems forced the departure to be postponed.
Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie called the situation “disgraceful” but later confirmed the team would depart on Monday. In his X account he detailed:
“All @BafanaBafana players have received their visas to travel to the United States; what is missing is the assistant coach, the team doctor, the head of security and an analyst. The charter will leave tomorrow.”
The South African Football Association (SAFA) reported that it is working tirelessly to get the team to Mexico City before the opening match on June 11, where they will face the host. Meanwhile, the squad will train in Johannesburg.
SAFA said it would provide an update following an emergency meeting on Sunday night. South Africa shares Group A with Mexico, Czech Republic and South Korea.
