An Any Day in the Tourist Paradise of Sinaloa
Ah, Culiacán and Navolato. Those jewels in the crown of the Mexican Pacific, where the sun shines, the waves break gently and the current day of violence left its usual balance of tragedy and absurdity. Because nothing says “welcome” like the aroma of gunpowder mixed with the sea breeze. On what authorities probably classify as a “Monday,” five men were deprived of their lives – a euphemism as elegant as it was macabre – and another six had to make an unplanned visit to the hospital.
The day began with the classic discovery of the abandoned wagon. A vehicle model that, in Sinaloa, rarely contains fishing tools or agricultural products. No, on this occasion, in the Aguamitas fishing camp, the interior offered two male bodies with bullet impacts. The authorities, in a burst of efficiency, began forensic work to verify if they were missing people. Because, of course, what would a day be without the uncertainty of whether the corpses are those that were already lost or new ones?
Of Scenic Walks and Macabre Gifts
Meanwhile, on a picturesque road that leads from El Tecolote to the Tepuche syndicate, the landscape was adorned with the bodies of two young people, conveniently accompanied by an abandoned motorcycle. To make the picture more complete, they showed not only bullet holes, but also marks of blows. Because in the world of organized crime, the details are what count.
But the touch of surrealist mastery came shortly before: on one side of the kiosk in the central square of the same union, someone decided to leave a black plastic bag. Content? The head of a person. A grotesque detail that, without a doubt, completely ruins the bucolic atmosphere of any square. The features were not revealed, which is a shame. One always wonders about the haircut style that the deceased wore in his last moments.
Violence, like a bad neighbor, also made an appearance on Mina Real Street in the 8 de Febrero neighborhood. There, young Joe Louis “N”, 18 years old, received a visit from some subjects at the door of his house. They surprised him in the patio and gave him several shots. A scene so common that it could almost be the plot of a local soap opera, but with a less happy ending.
The Unlikely Escape and the Unlucky Blacksmiths
In a plot twist that not even the most creative screenwriter would dare to propose, the next chapter takes us to a parking lot near the State Services Unit. Armed men tried to deprive Luis Eduardo “N”, 38, of his freedom. Faced with this proposal, Luis Eduardo was not amused and opted for the classic strategy of “running.” They shot him, but in an act of audacity worthy of a movie, he managed to hide… in the toilet area. Minutes later, they reported the arrest of two subjects with tactical equipment. Because, what would a commando be without its tactical team? Clearly, they would be less coordinated.
Violence does not discriminate by profession. On José Rosas Moreno Street, in the Bachigualato neighborhood, a father and his son, both blacksmiths by profession, received a shower of lead while they were working. Jesús Alfonso and Jesús Elías, 17 years old, were taken to the hospital. One wonders if the attackers wanted to ask them for a quote for some bars and the negotiation went horribly wrong.
To close with a flourish, a hospital in the capital notified the admission of Fausto “N”, Héctor “N” and Jesús Manuel “N”, the latter 19 years old, all with gunshot wounds. The location of the events is unknown, which adds that touch of mystery that we enjoy so much in chronicles of events. Was it a traffic argument? A misunderstanding in a store? A target shooting contest where the participants were the targets? The world will never know.
In short, another day in the vibrant state of Sinaloa, where daily life mixes with violence in such a natural way that it almost goes unnoticed. A tragicomedy in which the main actors are bullets, abandoned motorcycles and heads in bags, and the audience can only watch with a mixture of horror and resignation.
