Mexico’s position in the review of the T-MEC
President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that Mexico will seek to extend the validity of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC) for another 16 years. At a press conference, he reported that he has already signed the official position that will be presented in the review process.
Sheinbaum explained that one of the options provided within the agreement itself is to extend its period. If there is no consensus, a formal review would begin to analyze possible adjustments.
Trilateral meeting and benefits of the agreement
The trilateral meeting will be held on July 1 with the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, Canadian representatives and US officials. The president maintained that the T-MEC benefits the three trade partners.
“Particularly, the treaty is convenient for the three countries,” he stated.
As an example, he pointed out that tariffs have impacted the automotive industry. “The increase in the price of automobiles in the United States has been more than 30% due to tariffs,” he said.
Sheinbaum highlighted the previous diplomatic work, but asked to wait for the results of the meeting. He announced that on Thursday Ebrard will report on the agreements reached.
