Commitment to justice in the murder of a councilor
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated her strong condemnation of the murder of the mayor of Uruapan, Carlos Manzo, describing the act as a cowardly and reprehensible act. During her morning conference at the National Palace, the federal president offered her condolences to the family, friends and collaborators of the deceased official, ensuring that the crime will not go unpunished and that her administration will not abandon the population of Michoacán.
Sheinbaum Pardo pointed out that the investigations continue under the coordination of the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Michoacán, with the full support of the federal government. This includes the analysis of the arrests made at the time of the attack against the mayor. The head of the national Executive was emphatic when she declared: “There will be no impunity, we will continue all investigations until we can find all those responsible, not just the materials,”, underlining the determination to reach all those involved intellectually and materially in this serious crime.
Security strategy and criticism of the opposition
In a forceful speech, the president referred to the accusations of the opposition, whom she described as acting like “vultures” in the face of the tragedy. He attributed the origin of the current situation of violence in the entity to the so-called war against drug trafficking that began during the mandate of former president Felipe Calderón Hinojosa. Sheinbaum argued that “the strength of the state is justice” and that calls for greater militarization or open conflict are failed strategies. “That doesn’t work,” he stated, “It was what led to the situation of violence in Michoacán.”.
Faced with this panorama, the president outlined the pillars of her own security strategy, based on the fight against impunity, the pursuit of justice, attention to the structural causes of crime, and the strengthening of institutional presence and intelligence capabilities. He questioned the proposals of his political critics with a rhetorical question: “What does the right propose? The war on drugs? That García Luna returns? The intervention? That goes nowhere. We are going to reinforce Michoacán and other states, but strengthening presence, intelligence, zero impunity.”.
A call to defend sovereignty and peace
From the Treasury Room, Claudia Sheinbaum accused sectors of the right and what she called “cometocrats” of launching a barrage of criticism taking advantage of the sad event. He expressed his surprise at the lack of solidarity towards the victim’s family, commenting: “At no time did I hear any condolences to the family, but yes, like vultures.” He reiterated his firm rejection of any form of external interventionism, reaffirming that Mexico is a free, independent and sovereign nation.
The president concluded her speech with a message of firmness and commitment: “We are going to continue working to defend peace and justice, we are never going to give up.” This statement reinforces the official position of confronting insecurity with a model that prioritizes law enforcement and peacebuilding over the merely reactive and brute force actions that characterized previous administrations. The case of Mayor Manzo has thus become a turning point that shows the profound divergences in visions of public security and that tests the effectiveness of the zero impunity policy promoted by the current federal government.
