The return (with apologies and memes) of Sergio Mayer
Sergio Mayer is back at the Palacio de San Lázaro. After missing more than three weeks to enter The House of the Famous, the former Garibaldi reappeared this Wednesday in the Chamber of Deputies.
And the first thing he did was apologize publicly. He acknowledged that leaving his seat for a reality show was not the most politically correct thing to do, although it was legal. An obligatory mea culpa after the scandal.
But you know what? Hours before, the mood was very different. On his Instagram stories, the guy was in full meme mode.
“Look at nothing more than beauty, this is the reception they are going to give me today. After a while I am going to show you all the protocol event that is going to take place here,” he said with a laugh in a video from San Lázaro.
I thought it was quite a ceremony for him. The reality was less glamorous: it was the flag raising for the anniversary of the Military School of Medicine. Soldiers attended, not fans.
The context
Mayer became a trend on February 17 when he appeared by surprise at Telemundo’s house. That same night it was learned that he had requested indefinite leave to be absent. Three weeks later, here he is, navigating between the formal apology and the joke on networks.
It is the perfect chronicle of our era: a congressman who crosses the line between politics and entertainment without flinching. And then he tries to handle the consequences with one foot in each world.
