Measles outbreak in Mexico: 43 deaths in two years
The Ministry of Health reported two new deaths from measles, bringing the total to 16 so far in 2026. If the 27 deaths in 2025 are added, there are 43 since the outbreak began, according to the Special Epidemiological Surveillance System for Febrile Exanthematic Disease.
Zacatecas leads deaths in 2026, with five. Jalisco and Mexico City follow, with three each. Durango, Michoacán, Guerrero, Sinaloa and Tlaxcala report one death per entity.
In 2025, Chihuahua accounted for 21 of the 27 deaths. The rest was distributed in Jalisco (2), Sonora (1), Mexico City (1), Durango (1) and Chiapas (1).
Entities with the most infections
From January 1, 2025 to June 11, 2026, 18,223 cases of measles were confirmed and 42,773 probable. Jalisco is the most affected state, with 6,428 infections, followed by Mexico City (984) and Chiapas (833).
The child population is the most vulnerable. The highest incidence rate is recorded in children under one year of age: 88.50 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. They are followed by the group from 1 to 4 years (27.89) and from 5 to 9 years (19.99).
Health authorities maintain epidemiological surveillance and call for completing vaccination schedules to contain the outbreak.
