Analysis of the Advancement of the Measles Outbreak in Mexico
The General Directorate of Epidemiology of the Secretary of Health (Ssa) has confirmed an increase of 78 new cases of measles in the national territory, raising the accumulated figure from 5,153 to 5,231 infections between epidemiological weeks 44 and 45, corresponding to the period from November 7 to 14. This data reflects a continuity in the active transmission of the virus, a highly contagious pathogen that was considered controlled and that represents a significant challenge for Mexican public health.
The analysis of the geographical distribution of the disease confirms that the state of Chihuahua remains the undoubted epicenter of the disease. This federal entity reported an increase of seven infections, going from 4,429 to 4,436 confirmed cases. They are followed in magnitude by Jalisco, with 178 registered infections; Michoacán, with 150; Guerrero, with 120; Sonora, with 102; and Sinaloa, with 23. Other entities such as Zacatecas (21), Tamaulipas (12), the State of Mexico (10) and Mexico City (7) complete the panorama of the regions with the highest incidence. The viral spread is national, with presence in states such as San Luis Potosí, Oaxaca, Guanajuato, Colima, Campeche, Morelos, Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Hidalgo, Yucatán and Nuevo León, all of them with six cases or less.
Epidemiological Profile and Impact on the Population
A detailed examination of demographic data reveals that the most vulnerable age group continues to be children aged 1 to 4 years old, followed by the population segment aged 25 to 29 years. Within these groups, the majority of diagnosed cases affect women. The most critical variable identified in this outbreak is vaccination status. The epidemiological report strongly indicates that more than 90% of the individuals who contracted the disease lacked a documented vaccination history. Only 5% of the patients had one dose of the vaccine, and 3% had two or more, proportions that have remained unchanged in the weekly comparison, which underlines the effectiveness of immunization as a protective barrier.
The most serious consequence of this health event is materialized in the 23 accumulated deaths confirmed by the Ministry of Health until week 45. The majority of these deaths are concentrated in the state of Chihuahua, and in a fact that reinforces the scientific evidence, none of the deceased had a record of previous vaccination against measles. This fact establishes a direct correlation between lack of immunization and the risk of fatal outcome, highlighting the importance of complete vaccination schedules.
The situation described demands intensive epidemiological surveillance and the reinforcement of immunization campaigns, especially in regions identified as red hot spots. Containment of this outbreak depends largely on vaccine coverage and the health system’s ability to interrupt chains of community transmission.
