Atlas signs a Spanish defender: solution or more of the same?
It seems that Atlas has decided that the solution to its defensive problems comes in a package with a Galician accent. Rober Pier, the Spanish defender that surely no one in Mexico knew until today, is already in Guadalajara ready to sign his contract and, supposedly, save the Rojinegros from their eternal defensive drama. What a thrill! Or not.
From Galicia to Guadalajara: a journey full of… hope?
At 30 years old and with a resume that includes teams such as Deportivo La Coruña, Levante and Sporting de Gijón, Pier arrives to “cover the gap” left by Martín Nervo, who was unceremoniously cut with six months left on his contract. Because, of course, what better way to demonstrate institutional stability than to fire a player early and bring in someone from the other side of the ocean?
The most ironic thing is that Sporting de Gijón and Atlas share an owner: the Grupo Orlegi. So, technically, this is not a signing, but an “internal loan” between companies. Brilliant strategy or simple recycling of players? You decide.
Pier, for his part, comes from a season in the Spanish Second Division, which makes him the perfect reinforcement for a team that aspires to compete in the Liga MX. Nothing like a defender accustomed to second-rate rivals to face the most lethal forwards in Mexico. What could go wrong?
Medical and physical examinations: the ritual before failure
Before his signing is official, Pier will have to go through the traditional medical exams, where they will surely check if he has a pulse and if he knows how to distinguish between a ball and a medicine ball. If all goes well (that is, if he doesn’t get hurt during the checkup), he’ll sign his contract and join a team that historically has a knack for turning decent defenders into living memes.
Meanwhile, Atlas fans wonder: is this really the reinforcement that will lead them to glory? Or is he simply another name in the long list of players who pass through Guadalajara without leaving a mark? Time will tell… or not.
