The news fell like a ball pumped into the area. Hirving ‘Chucky’ Lozano, just one season after his arrival in Major League Soccer, no longer figures in San Diego FC’s plans. His coach, Mikey Varas, was direct: the Mexican winger “doesn’t fit in and the best thing is to continue without him”. And so, with a contract valid until 2028 but without space in the sports project, the two-time World Cup winner is looking for a new team.
The open door in Ciudad Universitaria
In the offices of the National University Club, the movement did not go unnoticed. The possibility of incorporating a player with Lozano’s profile and career for the next Clausura 2026 tournament was established as a tempting, although complex, option. When asked about the interest, Antonio Sancho, sports vice president of the Pumas, did not deny it. Instead, he opted for an answer that left more questions than answers.
“A player like ‘Chucky’ is always interesting. At the end of the day he is a player with a high level… it would be interesting,” Sancho declared. His words were a tacit recognition of the footballer’s sporting value, but also a clear sign that any negotiation is far from being simple.
The analysis beyond the name
The Auriazul leader was clear in pointing out the immediate obstacles. The economic factor appears as the first and great barrier. “First we would have to see if it fits into the budget,” he admitted, suggesting that Lozano’s salary structure, coming from a league with purchasing power like the MLS, could be a difficult obstacle to overcome for the university club’s finances.
In addition, Sancho clarified that, for the moment, the name ‘Chucky’ is not even on the table formally. “We haven’t explored, or anything like that,” he stated. The news of his departure took everyone by surprise, including the Pumas board. The club is in an advanced phase of forming its squad for the next competition and claims to have it practically complete.
However, it left a window open. He acknowledged that they could still add one more incorporation before the closing of the winter transfer market. That last spot could be for an impact reinforcement, and that’s where the intrigue lies. Will Lozano be that bomb reinforcement? Time will tell.
The truth is that this possible signing transcends sports. He is an iconic player of the Mexican National Team, with experience in Europe and a name that sells t-shirts. His arrival in Ciudad Universitaria would be a huge media coup and a declaration of ambition. But it would also imply assuming a substantial financial commitment and adapting a tactical scheme to a very specific profile.
For now, everything is speculation. Pumas has the interest on the table and recognizes the player’s attractiveness. But between interest and signing there is a long road to travel, paved with cold numbers and strategic decisions. ‘Chucky’ is looking for a team; Pumas evaluates options. Whether their paths cross will depend on whether both can align sporting expectations and economic realities.
