Wildlife needs heroes! Profepa in action
Imagine a world where every living thing, big or small, has the opportunity to thrive. That’s exactly what the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa) is doing for our incredible non-human primates! With a heart full of passion and commitment, its staff has initiated surveillance tours to protect species such as the spider monkey, the manted howler monkey, and the black howler monkey during this season of extreme heat. Because every life counts!
A protocol that saves lives
It’s not just about reacting, but about preventing! Profepa has taken a giant step by disseminating the Protocol for care of non-human primates in emergency, presented on April 9 to key authorities in Veracruz, Tabasco, Campeche and Chiapas. This plan not only involves the National Guard and Civil Protection, but also the Rural Police and the Secretariat of National Defense. Teamwork to the fullest!
What does this protocol include? From precautionary measures to rescue and containment techniques, every detail is designed to give these animals the best possible care. Because they deserve to live in a safe and secure environment!
The heat won’t stop them
Although this year’s weather conditions are different from those of 2024, Profepa does not let its guard down. Let us remember that last year, a heat wave claimed the lives of hundreds of primates in Tabasco. That can’t happen again! For this reason, since March, the agency has worked tirelessly to avoid another tragedy.
Unfortunately, in April the deaths of two specimens of howler monkey were reported in Comalcalco, Tabasco. In one case, the state of decomposition prevented determining the cause, while in the other, the primate died from electrocution. Situations like these reinforce the importance of continuing to act quickly and determinedly.
The commitment is still alive!
Profepa will not stop. It will continue to pay attention to citizen reports, holding meetings to disseminate the protocol and carrying out surveillance tours in the areas where these wonderful animals live. In addition, it will maintain close collaboration with Semarnat, civil organizations and specialized care centers. Together, we can make a difference!
