Profepa denounces trafficking of 774 turtles as cosmetics

A shipment of 774 specimens was intercepted in Tijuana, revealing an illegal trafficking network that puts protected species at risk.

An Act of Courage that Defends Our Planet

Today I want to share with you a story that reminds us of the incredible power of decisive action and environmental justice. The Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection, our beloved Profepa, has taken a monumental step by presenting a formal complaint to the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic. The reason? The rescue of 774 turtle-shaped souls that were being trafficked in the cruelest way imaginable, disguised as simple cosmetics. This discovery occurred on November 12 at the airport in Tijuana, Baja California, and is a living testimony that when we unite for a just cause, good always prevails.

Imagine for a moment the resilience of these beings: wrapped in socks, crammed inside plastic boxes that in turn traveled in nine cardboard boxes labeled “cosmetics.” This is not just a story of survival, but a desperate call from our planet asking us to open our eyes and act. Profepa has been clear: the complaint is against all those responsible for this crime against our biodiversity, because every life, no matter how small, deserves respect and protection.

The Force of Law at the Service of Life

This case shows us how negligent transportation and the absence of documentation create a scenario of environmental damage that puts our natural heritage at serious risk. According to article 3 of the Federal Environmental Responsibility Law, these actions have consequences, and today we are seeing how justice is mobilized to protect what matters most: life in all its forms. The turtles were shipped via a commercial parcel delivery company, proving that even in the most organized systems, vigilance and awareness can make the difference between life and death for innocent species.

The crime against our biodiversity began from the moment these wildlife species, subject to special protection, were uprooted from their natural habitat. Every extraction, every clandestine transportation, every improper handling alters its integrity and dramatically reduces its chances of survival. That is why Profepa not only seeks punishment, but reparation and compensation for environmental damage. This teaches us that we can always look for a way to correct our mistakes and work towards the healing of our planet.

Let’s meet our heroines: the 774 turtles belong to the species Kinosternon cora, Kinosternon acutum, Kinosternon cruentatum, Kinosternon integrum and Kinosternon oaxacae. The most inspiring thing is that three of these species are listed in NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 as subject to special protection. This means that each one of them represents living hope for their species, a reminder that our fight for conservation is worth every effort.

When Vigilance Becomes Salvation

Last November 12 marked a turning point when elements of Profepa and the National Guard identified anomalies during the inspection of the parcel area. This moment shows us the power of conscious attention and commitment to our work. The animals had been transferred from the State of Mexico to Tijuana, a trip that could have ended in tragedy, but thanks to timely intervention became a second chance.

Profepa has filed this complaint not only as a legal procedure, but on behalf of the true victims and as an contributor to the integration of the investigation file. This attempt to illegally traffic these specimens constitutes a crime against our biodiversity, provided for and sanctioned by the Federal Penal Code. Every legal action, every complaint, every judicial process is one more step towards the world we dream of: one where humans and nature coexist in harmony and mutual respect.

This case is much more than news: it is a reminder that our individual and collective actions transform realities. The next time you see a turtle, or any living being, remember that they deserve our respect and protection. Today we celebrate that 774 lives had a second chance, and tomorrow we will work so that thousands more never need to be rescued.

Your voice has power! Share this incredible story of hope and resilience on your social networks to inspire more people to join in protecting our biodiversity. Together we can create a world where every species has the opportunity to flourish. Will you join this mission?

They suspend a judge who modified preventive detention from extraditable

A judge altered a precautionary measure without legal basis and was removed from office.

Suspension due to irregularities in hearing

The Judicial Disciplinary Court provisionally suspended a control judge. The judge modified without basis the preventive detention of a person subject to extradition.

According to the Disciplinary Commission, during a hearing intended to review whether this precautionary measure should be maintained or changed, the judge deviated from the objective. He asked the Public Ministry to propose new measures. He then determined that it was not appropriate to maintain justified preventive detention and replaced it with less restrictive ones.

The Commission noted that the hearing lost its original purpose: to analyze whether the measure should continue, be modified, or repealed in accordance with the law. He considered that the action could affect the procedure and raise doubts about legal certainty. For this reason, it decided on the provisional suspension as a precautionary measure.

The president of the Disciplinary Commission, Judge Rufino H. León Tovar, stated:

This body will act firmly when there are elements that call into question the correct actions of those who administer justice.

He added that judicial resolutions must consider their impact on people’s lives, on the protection of victims and on public confidence in the criminal justice system. The suspension does not resolve the substance of the matter; seeks to protect the investigation while determining whether there was irregularity.

CNTE withdraws sit-in in CDMX and returns to Oaxaca

Oaxacan teachers remove sit-in from the Historic Center after state assembly.

Assembly decision

The National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) is moving towards the end of its current day of struggle. Section 22 of Oaxaca agreed to withdraw its bases from the sit-in in the Historic Center of Mexico City and return to the entity to reorganize actions.

The state assembly of Oaxacan teachers made this decision after analyzing the results of the negotiations with the federal government. The largest contingent of the CNTE arrived at the National Representative Assembly (ANR) with the position of withdrawing the movement. The ANR started at 9:00 p.m. this Friday.

In the afternoon, work began to dismantle tents, tarps and structures in the streets surrounding the Zócalo. Hundreds of teachers were preparing to return to their states.

Political and organizational route

The ANR will formalize the decision on the recess of the national strike and will define the political and organizational route for the coming weeks. Leaders reiterated that government responses have been insufficient, especially in pensions and repeal of the ISSSTE Law of 2007. The wear and tear of the mobilization and the lack of new agreements led the bases to support a tactical withdrawal.

If the agreement is ratified, the lifting of the sit-in will put an end to almost three weeks of protests, blockades and mobilizations. The CNTE maintains its demands and will continue the fight through other means.
