The PRI parliamentary group in the Chamber of Deputies presented an initiative to reform the Federal Labor Law. The proposal seeks to extend paternity leave from five to 20 paid working days.
Family co-responsibility
The legislators pointed out that the current scheme is insufficient in the face of new family dynamics and international standards. They considered that limiting leave to only five days reinforces an unequal view of the paternal role and reduces their participation in a key stage for family development.
The initiative proposes to reform section XXVII Bis of article 132 of the Federal Labor Law. The objective is to guarantee the presence of the father during the first days of the child’s life. According to the proposal, this expansion would allow greater participation in the upbringing, accompaniment and support of the pregnant person.
The PRI deputies highlighted that the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation has recognized the importance of a balanced distribution of parental responsibilities. They also pointed out that different countries in Latin America and Europe have moved towards broader models of parental leave.
Benefits for child development
The PRI caucus stressed that active parenthood has positive effects on the emotional, psychological and physical development of girls and boys. In addition, it strengthens family ties and promotes greater equality in household chores.
