Last test with victory
Portugal closed its preparation for the World Cup with a 2-1 victory over Nigeria in Leiria. The match left lights and shadows, especially in the performance of Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 41-year-old striker, the all-time leading scorer with 143 international goals, failed to increase his tally. He missed at least two clear opportunities where he only had to beat the goalkeeper. He was substituted in the 65th minute, after playing more time than any other starter.
Goals and Nigerian reaction
Pedro Neto opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Nigeria responded 14 minutes later with a goal from Akor Adams. The tie lasted until the 75th minute, when Francisco Conceição – one of the 11 Portuguese substitutions – received from the right and placed the ball in the far corner.
Nigeria did not qualify for the World Cup. Portugal will be part of Group K along with Uzbekistan, Congo and Colombia.
