A forceful closing of preparation
England dispatched Costa Rica 3-0 at the Inter&Co Stadium, in a match that started an hour late due to a storm. It was the last test for the Three Lions before the World Cup.
Declan Rice opened the scoring in the 9th minute, after an assist from Anthony Gordon. Gordon himself extended the lead with a penalty in the 68th, called by referee Katja Koroleva for a handball by Luis Araya. Ollie Watkins closed the score at 87, taking advantage of a rebound from goalkeeper Abraham Madriz.
Coach Thomas Tuchel rotated the squad and included figures such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. The Costa Rican team, for its part, barely disturbed the rival goal and was saved from a major defeat thanks to the interventions of Patrick Sequeira.
Costa Rica, which did not qualify for the World Cup under the direction of Miguel Herrera, is going through a stage of reconstruction led by Argentine Fernando Batista. The English will debut in the World Cup next Wednesday against Croatia, and then they will face Ghana and Panama in Group L.
