Portugal’s list for the 2026 World Cup
The Portuguese coach Roberto Martínez announced this Tuesday the call for the World Cup to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The list, presented on the outskirts of Lisbon, has two names that attract attention: Cristiano Ronaldo, who will play in his sixth World Cup, and Diogo Jota, included as a posthumous tribute.
Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, continues to be the standard bearer of the Portuguese team. With this call-up, the forward becomes the first footballer to reach six appearances in a World Cup. Martínez summoned him along with 26 other players for the tournament that will begin in June.
“Diogo Jota is one more forever,” said the coach when referring to the tribute.
The 28-year-old forward, a regular in Portugal’s lineups, died in a car accident in Spain in July last year. His symbolic inclusion on the list reflects the impact his loss had on the group and the respect for his memory.
Portugal seeks to become world champion for the first time in its history. With the experience of Cristiano Ronaldo and the team’s unity around the memory of Jota, the team faces the challenge with a mix of experience and emotion. The tournament will start in less than a month and the Portuguese will debut in Group H.
