The legend that said ‘yes’ to terror
Imagine this: you have 52 years of career, you are a respected leading actress and, suddenly, you are offered to star in an extreme horror film. That happened to Patricia Reyes Spindola. And although he confesses that the genre is not his thing, at 72 years old he decided that it was the perfect time to do something completely different.
“I have never made gore films, such gore, or whatever it is called and I want to say that it is not a line that I like either”
But there is the key. After more than half a century acting, how many opportunities do you have left to reinvent yourself? Patricia saw it clearly: it was now or never.
A challenge with blood (literal)
“I don’t like it, but… at 72 years old, I’ve never made gore movies. It’s not bad to do it. Something you’ve never done, that it happens to you at this point in life… is almost something to be grateful for”
Your logic is impeccable. The film – which he shares with Joaquín Cosío – is not exactly smooth. We are talking about strong scenes, a lot of blood and extreme situations where they play the villains who pursue two young Spaniards.
The curious thing is how he approaches the project. The further he progressed in the script, the scarier he became. He even wondered how he would do such intense scenes. But that’s the job: when you’re a real actress, you play whatever it takes.
The production is half Mexican (recorded in Guadalajara) and half Spanish. And just the strongest parts will be recorded soon in Pamplona.
“Sometimes I was afraid to read the script, do you think? I said ‘no, how am I going to make this so ugly?'”
But it will. Because after 52 years in this, he knows that the best challenges are the ones that scare you the most at first.
