The trip is over
The news reached us this week and, honestly, it hurts a little. After almost two decades, Patricia Maya and Rob Schneider have decided to separate their paths. Eighteen years is a long time, right? It’s longer than Friends lasted on the air.
His story was one of those that makes you believe in unlikely crushes. Ella, a Yucatecan producer with a career in Mexican television. He, the gringo comedian from films like This body is not mine. They met in Mexico, when he came to promote a movie.
“It took us a while to get out, we talked from a distance, by email; then we had to wait to get married (four years) and have children, we handled everything calmly,”
That’s what Patricia told this newspaper in 2023. A love that simmered from the first moment, despite the 26 years of difference.
A creative (and family) team
She was the one who moved from the country. He learned English better than he already knew. He never fully mastered Spanish. But they found their common language in humor and projects.
They worked together in series like Rob and the movie What a trip with dad!. They wanted to mix the two types of comedy: Mexican and American.
“I wanted a comedy with both humors, which are different,” said Patricia.
They even co-directed Amor es amor for Paramount+, although that production for some reason never saw the light of day.
Patricia also had her own space. She collaborated in the writing of Los Colorado, always seeking that balance between being herself and being “the wife of.”
There came a point where he understood that this struggle was more of a personal issue.
“I said, ‘Who cares about that, I’m doing what I want… it’s my life.'”
She dedicated herself to being a full-time mom and enjoying projects with Rob. Until now.
Today that chapter closes. Eighteen years of a relationship that crossed borders, languages and comic genres. A quiet ending to a story that started calmly.
