Osmar Olvera’s historic triumph in Singapore
The Mexican diver Osmar Olvera wrote his name in gold letters when he was crowned world champion in the 3-meter springboard final during the World Aquatic Sports Championships held in Singapore. With a total score of 529.55 units, the athlete defeated the Chinese favorites Yuan Cao (522.70) and Zongyuan Wang (515.55), thus breaking a two-decade hegemony in this discipline.
A technical and strategic battle
The competition was a duel of precision from the beginning. Olvera equaled Wang’s 91.80 points score on his first jump, staying in contention despite placing third after the fourth round (329.45 points). The decisive moment came in the fifth execution, where the Mexican executed an almost perfect dive that earned him 102.60 points, the highest in the final, even surpassing Cao, who until then was leading.
With a minimal advantage before the last jump, Olvera sealed his victory with a shot of 97.50 points, compared to 91.20 for his Chinese rival. His consistency and technical mastery in critical phases demonstrated why he is one of the best divers in recent history.
A growing legacy
This gold marks Olvera’s eighth medal in world championships, consolidating his record of achievements:
- Silver in 3m and 1m springboard (Japan 2023)
- Bronze in 3m and gold in 1m (Qatar 2024)
- Three silver in team and synchronized events
In addition, he becomes the first non-Asian to win this event since 2005, marking a milestone for global diving.
Technical analysis: Keys to success
Experts highlight two key factors in his victory:
- Adaptability: He adjusted his technique after each round to maximize scores.
- Psychological pressure: Staying focused despite China’s historical dominance in the discipline.
His coach, Ivan Bautista, highlighted: “Osmar combined power with elegance. Each entry into the water was calculated to the millimeter.”.
This result reinforces Mexico’s position as a power in aquatic sports and projects Olvera as a favorite for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
