Osmar Olvera makes history at the World Aquatic Sports Championships
The Mexican diver Osmar Olvera wrote his name in gold letters when he won the gold medal in the 3-meter springboard final of the World Aquatic Sports Championship in Singapore 2025. With a total score of 529.55 units, the Aztec athlete surpassed the Chinese favorites Yuan Cao (522.70) and Zongyuan Wang (515.55), thus breaking a two-decade hegemony in this discipline.
A high voltage final
The competition was marked by a technical duel with no room for error. Olvera, a double Olympic medalist in Paris 2024, executed two perfect dives in the final rounds that defined the result. On the first jump, he tied with Wang with 91.80 points, staying in the fight for the podium. However, it was in the fifth round where he displayed his best repertoire: a dive valued at 102.60 points, the highest of the session, which allowed him to take a decisive advantage.
“I knew that every jump counted. At the key moment, I trusted my training and the strategy with my coach,” declared the champion after the victory. His last jump, evaluated at 97.50 points compared to Cao’s 91.20, sealed a victory that resonated on the international diving circuit.
A legacy that grows
With this gold, Olvera adds his eighth World Cup medal:
- 2 silvers (3m and 1m in Japan 2023)
- 1 bronze (3m in Qatar 2024)
- 1 gold (1m in Qatar 2024)
- 3 silvers in mixed and synchronized tests
- 1 gold in 3m individual (Singapore 2025)
In addition, he becomes the first non-Asian to win this event since 2005 and the third Mexican to do so, following in the footsteps of Paola Espinosa (platform, Rome 2009) and her own title in 1m springboard (Doha 2024). All under the guidance of coach Ma Jin, architect of Mexican success in high-performance diving.
The impact of this victory transcends sports: Mexico consolidates its position as an emerging power in aquatic sports, demonstrating its ability to compete against traditional powers such as China. Analysts highlight that Olvera’s consistency in consecutive tournaments (Japan 2023, Qatar 2024, Singapore 2025) reflects systemic work in the training of talents.
What’s next for the champion? Olvera confirmed that this triumph is part of his preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where he will seek to improve his previous performances. Meanwhile, his feat in Singapore is already inspiring a new generation of Mexican divers.
