So much “patriotic pride” to cover your face: the masked racists who marched in Washington

About 400 masked Patriot Front members marched near the Capitol on July 4. Behind the "patriotic" uniform is a fascist group that produces most of the US's racist propaganda and recruits young people under false pretenses.

Hundreds of members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front marched this Saturday, July 4 through various areas of Washington D.C., during the United States Independence Day celebrations. The group itself boasted online that it had arrived in the capital with around 400 members, captured traveling in formation on the city’s Metro.

Dressed in their characteristic uniform – khaki pants, cap, blue t-shirt and their face covered with a white cloth and sunglasses– they advanced to the rhythm of drums near the Capitol and Union Station, chanting “Reclaim America” (“Let’s take back America”) and carrying American and Confederate flags.

And there is the contradiction that explains itself: a group that calls itself the vanguard of “patriotism” and that marches to project strength and intimidate does not have the courage to show a single face. The mask is not an aesthetic detail; It’s a confession. They cover their identity because they know what they stand for and they fear the consequences—losing their jobs, having their neighbors and families recognize them—when their name becomes linked to an ideology that maintains that the United States should be a country “only by and for whites.”

It’s not just any group: what they defend

Behind the clean aesthetic is an openly fascist ideology, thus classified by the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which classify it as a white supremacist hate group. It is not a free tag:

  • Its logo is the fasces—the bundle of wands with an ax that was the original symbol of Mussolini’s fascism—, surrounded by 13 stars.
  • His manifesto maintains that membership in the American nation “is inherited by blood, not by ink.” That is to say: for them, someone who is not white cannot really be American.
  • Their stated goal is to turn the US into a “pan-European” ethnostate that excludes people of color, immigrants and refugees.
  • It is the main hate factory in the country: according to the ADL, Patriot Front alone generated 82% of all incidents of racist and anti-Semitic propaganda reported in the US in 2021—almost 4,000 incidents spread across virtually every state.

And although they sell themselves as “peaceful”, the record says otherwise: in 2022, 31 of their members were arrested piled into a U-Haul truck with riot gear, near an LGBT+ event in Idaho, accused of conspiring to cause a riot. In the last year alone, two members were arrested with arsenals of illegal high-powered rifles.

How they recruit: the “patriotic” trap

The most worrying thing is that it is growing: it went from a handful of members to around 540 at the beginning of 2026, doubling almost every year, with a presence in every state except Hawaii. How do they achieve it? Leaked internal documents reveal recruiting machinery targeting young white men:

  • Patriotic bait: they hand out flyers with harmless phrases like “America First” and images of white men, deliberately hiding their true racist ideology until the recruit is already inside.
  • “Fight clubs”: They operate a network of clubs where young people meet first online and then in person—in gyms, training in martial arts and boxing—and there they get hooked.
  • Sect vetting: applicants are forced to empty their pockets, they are searched by microphones and they are prohibited from using cell phones. And in a chilling detail, each new member is ordered to secretly have his face photographed and write down his license plates—insurance to blackmail or control him if he ever wants to go out or talk.

It is the same logic of the march: hide your face on the outside, while inside they make sure to have identified everyone who enters.

The Washington Metropolitan Police indicated that it monitored the group’s activity, protected by the First Amendment, and that no arrests were reported during the July 4 parade.

Milei accuses Brazil, Mexico and Democrats of campaigning against Argentina

Milei pointed out Brazil, Mexico and US Democrats without presenting evidence.

Milei’s accusations

The Argentine president, Javier Milei, accused the governments of Brazil and Mexico, as well as the Democratic Party of the United States, of financing an alleged campaign against Argentina. He did so during an interview with Radio Miter, without providing evidence.

According to Milei, the Brazilian government would have contributed 25% of the resources for that campaign. “Who invested the most money in this anti-Argentine campaign? The Brazilian government,” he stated. “And then they talk about interference,” he added.

Diplomatic tension on the rise

The statements occur in a climate of growing bilateral friction. Hours earlier, Brazil called its ambassador in Buenos Aires for consultations, in response to what it described as “offensive statements” by Milei. The Brazilian annoyance originated from comments by the Argentine president during an event in support of Flávio Bolsonaro, ahead of the presidential elections in October.

Milei also mentioned Mexico and the United States Democratic Party as alleged funders of the campaign, but did not offer concrete evidence. The episode deepens the distance between Argentina and Brazil, two key partners in Mercosur.

US and Iran resume talks mediated by Oman

Dialogue intensifies after military pause in the Strait of Hormuz.

Pause in military actions

The United States and Iran maintain a de facto truce for the second consecutive day. The ceasefire was not officially announced by Washington, but the US ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, indicated that it seeks to give space for diplomatic efforts. Tehran also confirmed the suspension of its operations during the same period.

Negotiations in progress

Both parties are trying to resume the provisional agreement reached in June. The talks, mediated by Oman and other actors, focus on ensuring safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for the global oil trade. Differences persist over the Iranian nuclear program.

Uncertainty extends to other routes such as the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, due to threats from the Houthis against Saudi maritime transport. The US Navy maintains surveillance in the area to protect commercial traffic.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will travel to Washington to meet with Trump. Netanyahu backed the diplomatic efforts, although he warned that he would respond firmly if Iran or its allies attack Israel.

Attack on Berlin Pride: one dead and 29 injured

A mass accident at the Berlin Pride parade leaves one dead and dozens injured.

The attack at the Pride parade

Germany faces new shock after the attack that occurred Saturday night during the Pride parade in Berlin. A white van broke into Tiergarten park around 10 p.m., running over dozens of people participating in Christopher Street Day (CSD), one of the busiest LGBTQ+ marches in Europe. The preliminary toll is one woman dead and 29 injured, none in critical condition. The vehicle ended up crashing into a tree.

The alleged perpetrator, Abdul Ballout, 21, a German citizen of Lebanese origin, was neutralized by special police forces in a shed in the Spandau district. According to the newspaper Bild, the agents opened fire after the man attacked them with a knife. Ballout died at the scene despite resuscitation attempts. The authorities identified him as a sympathizer of the Islamic State jihadist group and known for his links to extremist circles.

Witnesses indicated that, after getting out of the van, he attacked several passers-by with a machete. The search lasted more than a day with controls at borders, stations and airports. Police detained three people for questioning, although two were later released. The possible existence of accomplices is being investigated.

Investigation and political consequences

The site of the attack is a few meters from the end of the route and the main stage next to the Brandenburg Gate. On Sunday, citizens left flowers and messages such as:

“We must remain united”

Prayer services were held in St. Mary’s Church and a vigil in front of the Brandenburg Gate, where hundreds of people lit candles and displayed rainbow flags.

The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, went to the site accompanied by three ministers, laid a white rose and participated in a moment of prayer. This attack revives the debate on immigration and security two months before the regional elections in Saxony-Anhalt. The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) leads the polls with more than 40% of voting intentions, promoting proposals for “remigration” and tightening border controls. International leaders expressed solidarity with the country.
