A movie debut
Ethan Nwaneri needed no time to adjust. Just one day after arriving on loan from Arsenal, the 18-year-old scored a great goal in his first game for Marseille. His team beat Lens 3-1 and got back into the fight for Ligue 1 with force.
The victory was key. It ended a streak of ten consecutive wins for Lens and prevented them from taking the lead from PSG. Marseille, now third, is five points behind second and seven behind first.
The goal that said it all
It took Nwaneri just 13 minutes to score. He received in the middle of the field, dodged an opponent with class and from about 20 meters placed an impeccable left foot shot into the top corner. It was the provisional 2-0 in a vibrant Vélodrome.
The way he scored validated De Zerbi’s decision to start him directly.
He is not new to breaking records. At 15 years and 181 days he had already become the youngest player to debut in the Premier League with Arsenal. Now, his talent crosses the English Channel.
Amine Gouiri had opened the scoring after three minutes. Tim Weah scored the third after a great cross. Rayan Fofana scored too late for Lens.
Other results of the day
Things were not looking good for Monaco after a defeat against Real Madrid and a bad league streak. They managed to keep a clean sheet against Le Havre, but could not score (0-0).
The game was complicated for them with injuries. Wout Faes and Eric Dier had to go out injured, adding problems to an already punished team.
Further down, Lorient continues to add points towards permanence. They won 2-0 against Rennes in the Breton derby thanks to goals from Makengo and Pagis.
PSG, for its part, remains the leader after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Auxerre. The fight for the title is more alive than ever.
