A song transformed into a cry for justice
With more than 135 thousand people missing in Mexico, searching mothers and family members decided to raise their voices from the Monument to the Revolution. They adapted “Cielito Lindo”, a popular Mexican anthem, to denounce the crisis that does not stop.
The act occurred during the National Team’s third game in the World Cup. The modified version includes verses such as “we go searching, crossing seas and lands, never stopping.” Mothers, fathers, and family members held search tokens as they sang.
The intervention fused musical tradition with the demand for truth. Each stanza sought to remember those who have been taken away without a trace. “Cielito Lindo” stopped being just a song of encouragement and became an urgent call.
Authorities have recognized the magnitude of the problem, but families continue to point out the lack of resources and responses. The modified song is now circulating on social media as a symbol of resistance.
These actions seek to keep alive the memory of the missing and press for effective search and location policies.
