A change with an indigenous seal in the SEP
The Ministry of Public Education (SEP) has just moved a key piece on its board. Nadia López García, Mixtec pedagogue and poet, is the new head of Educational Materials. Their mission: lead the future of free textbooks.
The appointment comes after the dismissal of Marx Arriaga, who generated controversy by remaining in his office after being removed. The SEP and president Claudia Sheinbaum recognized his work, but noted that the dismissal was due to “changes in the modality of the position and differences over modifications to the educational content.”
“Pedagogue, indigenous poet and activist in educational and cultural rights”
This is how the dependency was presented to López. She is not just any official. She comes from Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, daughter of agricultural laborers. His life is a direct reflection of the realities that he now seeks to include in the content.
A trajectory forged from below
Before this position, he coordinated Literature at INBAL, promoting initiatives for youth and indigenous communities. He speaks Mixtec and lived firsthand the migrant experience between Oaxaca and the agricultural fields of the north.
That personal experience is now translated into public policy. The SEP announced that under its direction, materials adapted for girls, boys and adolescents in mobility situations will be included.
The stated objective is clear: to strengthen the contents under the principles of the New Mexican School. A humanistic approach that recognizes women in history and expands the visibility of indigenous peoples and Afro-descendant communities.
This movement is not just a change of person. It is a powerful symbolic change. They put an indigenous woman, native language speaker, with a migrant history, at the forefront of national educational content.
The question that remains: Will Nadia López be able to navigate the political waters of office while leaving her cultural mark? Textbooks are ideological minefields where every word is examined with a magnifying glass.
What is certain: Mexican educational theater has a new protagonist. And she comes loaded with a backpack full of experiences that few federal officials have had.
