Fast track for Plan B
The Chamber of Deputies is getting ready to turbocharge Claudia Sheinbaum’s new electoral reform initiative. Morena legislators are already calculating the times: analysis next week and everything ready in about three weeks. Hurry? They call it “giving certainty.”
Víctor Hugo Lobo, president of the Political-Electoral Commission, confirmed it: the proposal could arrive in San Lázaro on Tuesday. Its stated objective is clear:
“Accelerate the legislative process so that the modifications to the electoral law can be applied as soon as possible”
Journalistic translation: they want this approved towards the end of March or beginning of April. They assure that there will be analysis, but the pace will be fast. Very fast.
The other front: the new referees
While they push reform, they are also preparing another key movement. In March the call will go out to elect three new INE councilors. Vacancies open in April.
Here is the detail that stings: it is not defined whether there will be an open parliament or forums with specialists to review Plan B. Morena insists that the priority is to conclude the legislative process soon.
Interesting coincidence, right? Reform the rules while changing those who apply them. All in the same express lane.
Historical memory weighs: every time the electoral system is touched upon urgently, someone loses. And it is almost never the one who has the majority in Congress.
