Senate endorses appointment of magistrates in controversial session
The plenary session of the Senate of the Republic, with the majority support of Morena and its allies, approved the appointment of 56 electoral magistrates for 30 federal entities. The process, marked by rectifications and questions, required a second attempt after initially failing to reach a qualified majority.
Criticism of the process and political warnings
The coordinator of Morena, Adán Augusto López, acknowledged errors in the initial opinion, which was modified for final approval with 86 votes in favor, 34 against and one abstention. From the opposition, Clemente Castañeda (Citizen Movement) described the decision as a “blow to pluralism” and warned: “What they do not achieve at the polls, they will seek in courts.”
Analysts point out that this reconfiguration of state electoral bodies could influence the midterm elections of 2027, generating debates about judicial independence. The ruling party defends the process as a necessary adjustment, while critical voices interpret it as a strategy of institutional control.
