Between the 1970, 1986 and 2026 North American World Cups, the Mexican National Team has played eight home games at the Mexico City Stadium. The balance: six wins and two draws. No defeat. The Colossus of Santa Úrsula has become a fortress for the Tricolor.
However, the Czech Republic hopes to break that streak. Coach Miroslav Koubek spoke in advance of the last match of the group stage.
“We are very aware of the record in the stadium, those victories are fascinating. We have the greatest respect for Mexican soccer and the fans, but we focus on ourselves, on having the necessary points. Miracles happen, in soccer nothing is impossible,” declared Koubek.
The altitude of Mexico City is usually a factor against visitors. Koubek acknowledged that it is not an advantage for his team, but they hope to adapt. “We will try not to limit ourselves because of it, we will be able to adapt well,” he added.
Czech Republic returns to a World Cup after 20 years. To advance to the round of 32, they need to beat Mexico and hope for a combination of results. They could qualify as second if South Korea lose to South Africa, or as one of the best third parties.
“It’s a new tie, our last chance. In the European playoffs we proved that we could be successful with stronger teams and we must prove it again,” concluded the strategist.
Mexico seeks to close the group stage with a perfect score for the first time in its history. Undefeated at home is at stake.
