South Korea beats the Czech Republic 2-1 in its World Cup debut

South Korea debuts with victory against the Czech Republic at the Guadalajara Stadium.

South Korea started its participation in the 2026 North American World Cup on the right foot. The Asian Tigers defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 at the Guadalajara Stadium, adding their first three points.

Performance and winning goal

In-beom Hwang led the South Korean attack, although the team did not display the expected football. Forward Hyeon-gyu Oh, scorer of the winning goal, spoke in the mixed zone after the game.

“From the first half, many Mexican fans were shouting ‘Korea, Korea’. When I entered the field, near the end of the game, I again heard the Mexican and Korean fans encouraging us with shouts, that was a source of energy that allowed us to continue running and fighting: I could say that it was one of the keys to achieving victory.”

The Besiktas attacker acknowledged feeling grateful for the support received during the 90 minutes. Regarding scoring the goal that was worth three points, he expressed: “I am very happy to have scored in this first game, it was something I dreamed of four years ago. Although it is my first experience in a World Cup, four years ago I watched my teammates very closely and lived that experience, indirectly, so I was able to enter the field without getting too nervous.”

The physical challenge and the coach’s confidence

Oh revealed that he doubted his participation after a fever spike after lunch. “I thought several times if I could really play. I had many doubts, but our doctors took care of me with dedication,” he confessed.

He came on in the second half to replace Heung-min Son and became the hero. “The coach gave me a lot of confidence before coming in and told me to shoot a lot on goal. Thanks to that I was able to play with more confidence. I’m going to try even harder in the remaining games,” he added.

Serena Williams returns to singles at Wimbledon

The 44-year-old former champion accepted a wild card and will compete from Monday in the Grand Slam on grass.

Serena’s return

Serena Williams is now at the All England Club. The 44-year-old former champion accelerated her return to singles tennis and will compete at Wimbledon, which starts on Monday. He has not played an official singles match for almost four years.

Williams accepted a wild card for both singles and doubles, alongside her sister Venus. She recently played two doubles matches: winning with Victoria Mboko at the Queen’s Club and losing to Karolina Muchova at the Berlin Open. His serve and returns are still powerful, but the question is his mobility and resistance on the court.

“It’s a sign of confidence that she’s ready for the most prestigious tournament without having played singles in so long. But if anyone can do it, it’s Serena,” said ESPN commentator Mary Joe Fernández.

Patrick McEnroe added:

“This is Serena being Serena. It’s just like her to do something bold like that. I didn’t think for a minute that she would come back just to play doubles.”

With 23 Grand Slam singles titles – seven at Wimbledon – and 14 in doubles (all with Venus), no one doubts her experience. He also won Olympic gold in London 2012 in singles and doubles, right on the grass of the All England Club. She was runner-up four times in singles in this same tournament.

The singles draw will be on Friday. Williams will debut on Monday or Tuesday. “No one is going to want to face her,” said Fernandez, who captained Williams on the Fed Cup and the U.S. Olympic team.

The Williams sisters’ first doubles match will come later in the opening week. The expectation is maximum.
