An image that makes sense
In December 2007, Lionel Messi was caught on camera holding a baby. That child was Lamine Yamal. The photo, part of a charity campaign by UNICEF and the FC Barcelona Foundation, today goes viral in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup final.
Nobody imagined then that 19 years later they would face each other for the most important title in football.
Messi’s words
In an event organized by FIFA, the Argentine referred to that image:
“That photo is crazy, he was a baby, I laugh, it’s crazy. He is one of the best in the world right now, I wish him the best, always good for him and Barcelona.”
Messi also spoke about the sporting challenge:
“We will try to play better so that he does not have his best version, although it is difficult, both for him and for Spain, which arrives with great players. We have our weapons too.”
Recognition of young talent
At 19 years old, Yamal is already considered a world leader. Messi praised him without reservation and, at the same time, made Argentina’s position clear:
“He is a great player, he can achieve a lot, he plays for a club that I love, for which I wish the best. He is already a world leader at 19 years old, he has a great opportunity to achieve something historic, but we will do our best to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
The star was consulted about his opinion by other sports figures such as Novak Djokovic and Tom Brady. The final promises to be a generational crossover between the two-time champion and the young promise who grew up watching him.
