Judicial Response to Citizen Protests in Morocco
The Moroccan authorities have initiated legal proceedings against 2,480 individuals linked to the recent social mobilizations led by youth, which represent one of the largest expressions of citizen discontent against the government in recent years. Of this total, 1,473 people remain in preventive custody awaiting trial, according to official information.
The charges filed include serious criminal offenses such as armed rebellion, attacks against public officials in the exercise of their duties and acts of incitement to commit crimes. This forceful institutional response follows the demonstrations called by the Gen Z 212 movement, which managed to mobilize thousands of citizens in multiple locations in the Alawite kingdom.
Origin and Development of Mobilizations
The protests arose as a reaction to the state of fundamental public services, with special criticism of the allocation of government resources towards infrastructure for sporting events to the detriment of basic social needs. The coordination of these mobilizations was carried out predominantly through digital platforms such as Discord, where the organizers made an initial call for peaceful actions.
However, in various cities and towns the demonstrations led to episodes of violence that resulted in three deaths, numerous injuries and significant material damage to commercial establishments and vehicles. These incidents have generated a complex debate about the limits of the right to protest and the response of the security forces.
The kingdom’s attorney general has defended the legality of all the interventions carried out, while international human rights organizations have questioned the proportionality of the measures implemented. Hanan Salah, deputy director of Human Rights Watch, said in an official statement: “Those who ask for a fair chance for their future should not be met with lethal force and repression.”
National and International Repercussion
The scale of the arrests has caused significant alarm among Moroccan civil society organizations. The Moroccan Human Rights Association has described the arrests as arbitrary and random, while the Gen Z 212 movement has demanded the immediate release of all those detained.
Among the cases that have gained media notoriety is the arrest of Hamza Raid, a renowned Moroccan rapper arrested in Casablanca last month, whose musical compositions frequently address political themes and reflect the frustration of local youth.
The Public Ministry has provided updated data on the procedural development, indicating that more than 400 people have received sentences whose sentences range between one and fifteen years of deprivation of liberty. At the same time, 34 individuals have been acquitted of all charges after the corresponding judicial investigation.
This episode represents a turning point in the government’s management of social dissent in Morocco, where the tension between institutional stability and demands for social reform remains unresolved. The evolution of these judicial processes and their impact on the Moroccan sociopolitical climate will be crucial elements to monitor in the coming months.
