A black Saturday for the big boys of London
The Premier League does not forgive. And this weekend made that clearer than ever, especially in the capital. The two giants, Tottenham and Chelsea, went home with the bitter taste of lost points when they needed them most.
Tottenham still cannot raise its head in 2026. It has gone 15 games without a win in the league. This Saturday was the last straw: a last-gasp draw against Brighton (2-2) that keeps them stuck in the relegation zone.
“Now it’s difficult for them to listen to my words, but if you look at the players… I think we can win five games in a row,” said coach Roberto De Zerbi, trying to keep the faith alive.
But the reality is harsh. With five dates to play, they are just one point behind West Ham and two from salvation. Permanence, which seemed like a right since 1978, today is a desperate struggle.
Chelsea couldn’t either. They lost 1-0 at home to Manchester United. A goal from Matheus Cunha, assisted by Bruno Fernandes, buried their already distant Champions League hopes.
The Blues are sixth, 10 points behind United. The million-dollar investment of its American owners does not translate into results. The pressure on young coach Liam Rosenior is mounting.
“Right now, any little mistake we make and the ball ends up in our net,” Rosenior admitted. “That has to change.”
Other news from a busy weekend
- Newcastle is also in crisis. The boos rained down after their third straight defeat (2-1 against Bournemouth). Eddie Howe is becoming more and more committed.
- Brentford drew for the fifth time in a row (0-0 with Fulham) and says goodbye to its European dreams.
Leicester, champion a decade ago, is on the brink of the abyss: it is going straight to thethird division* after losing in Portsmouth.
- In contrast, the Wrexham of the cinema follows its dream: it is already just two points away from the playoffs to be promoted.
The moral is clear: in the Premier, no one has a guaranteed position. Neither the historical ones nor the newcomers. Every Saturday the future is played.
