Reunion on the red carpet
The Cannes Film Festival was the scene of a moving moment. Laura Dern appeared with her father, actor Bruce Dern, 89. The couple walked the red carpet together at the premiere of “Dernsie: The Amazing Life of Bruce Dern,” a biographical documentary directed by Mike Mendez. The film received a six-minute ovation.
It was the first time they were seen together after the death of Diane Ladd, Laura’s mother and Bruce’s ex-wife. Diane Ladd, Oscar-nominated actress, died in November 2025 at age 89 due to lung disease.
Career and family ties
Bruce Dern is a legendary actor with two Oscar nominations for “Coming Home” (1978) and “Nebraska” (2013). Laura Dern, 59, has won an Oscar, four Golden Globes and an Emmy. She is known for her work with David Lynch and for films such as “Jurassic Park.”
The relationship between father and daughter was distant for years. Before Laura was born, the couple lost their first daughter, who died at 18 months in a drowning accident in 1962. That event weakened their marriage. When Laura was born, in 1967, her parents were already living separately. Laura grew up primarily with her mother.
Bruce Dern avoided helping her in her beginnings as an actress. He preferred that she build her career on her own merit. The documentary reflects that history and the reunion in Cannes symbolizes a family reconciliation.
