Jannik Sinner is two-time Wimbledon champion after beating Zverev

Sinner defeats Zverev in a high-level final and reaches his fifth Grand Slam.

Historical victory on the London grass

Jannik Sinner, world tennis number 1, defended his crown at Wimbledon. The 24-year-old Italian beat the German Alexander Zverev (29) with sets of 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 and 6-4 after more than three hours of play. It is his fifth Grand Slam title and second in a row at the All England Club.

“Winning again at Wimbledon is incredible. I’m also happy that it was a top-level final,” Sinner said during the ceremony. The Italian is the first tennis player from his country to win twice in this tournament.

“I have to thank my team and also my mother, who was in the stands and I saw her leave a couple of times because of the tension,” he added with a laugh.

Sinner also had a gesture of fair play: he crossed the court to assist Zverev after a fall in the third set. The German, for his part, joked: “Jannik, I don’t like you anymore… Jokes aside, he showed once again why he is the best in the world.”

Zverev’s diabetes factor

During the first set, Zverev took advantage of a break to take insulin. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4, he uses a continuous glucose monitoring system. In 2022 he founded the ‘Alexander Zverev Foundation’ for research and support for children with diabetes.

Sinner, who also won the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome this year, achieved his 100th victory in Grand Slam tournaments. Among those in attendance were Prince William, Princess Kate, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and actors such as Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman.

“After Paris we worked a lot, there were endless days. I am giving my life for this sport. Winning here twice is incredible,” Sinner acknowledged when remembering his early elimination at Roland Garros.

Tuchel: “We are hungry and ready for the semi-final”

Tuchel admits that his players are hungry and respect Argentina, but avoids talking about history so as not to increase the pressure.

The English National Team overcame multiple obstacles to reach the semifinals of the World Cup: kilometers traveled, the curse at the Azteca Stadium, the heat and humidity of Miami. However, coach Thomas Tuchel assures that the team is not satisfied.

Hunger for glory

It has been 60 years since England have been world champions and eight since they have played in a semi-final. In 2018 they fell to Croatia. Now, respect for Argentina is total, but with an eye on the final.

“We are very hungry for the next victory, we respect our opponent and we do not make the events of the past bigger than they are. We are excited, very hungry and ready. We want to take the next step, no one is satisfied and that is the perfect mix for the result we want,” Tuchel declared in conference.

Extended rivalry

The “elephant in the room” is the Malvinas War and the precedent of Mexico 1986. Tuchel was more intense than Scaloni when talking about the subject, but he confessed that he does not discuss it with his players so as not to add mental pressure.

“The players know what this match means with so many iconic moments. It’s not just another match, but as coaches we focus on what we can influence. We don’t talk about the historical events. In itself it is an iconic enough match and the tension is enough, it doesn’t help if we get emotionally involved,” he mentioned.

No obsession with curses

Finally, Tuchel ruled out thinking about the statistic that no foreign coach has won the World Cup with a foreign team.

“It’s not an extra motivation, I don’t have those goals. I’m very competitive and I always try to be the best version of myself every day, that’s where my energy goes,” he concluded.

Mbappé is left without a final and without a Golden Boot for now

Mbappé is out of the final and ties with Messi in the fight for top scorer.

Mbappé, eliminated in the semifinals

Kylian Mbappé will not play in his third consecutive World Cup final. France lost 2-0 to Spain in the semifinals of the tournament held on Tuesday. The 27-year-old striker accumulated just 15 touches in the first half, the lowest number among attackers.

His best opportunity came in the 67th minute: a shot that deflected off Marc Cucurella and just missed the post. By then, Spain already won by two goals. Mbappé received a yellow card in the 86th minute for a play with goalkeeper Unai Simón.

The Frenchman has eight goals in the tournament, the same as Lionel Messi. The dispute for the Golden Boot is still open. Messi and Argentina face England this Wednesday in the other semifinal.

Mbappé had been substituted in the quarterfinals against Morocco, where he scored his eighth goal. In Qatar 2022 he also scored eight, but France lost the final against Argentina on penalties. Eight years ago, the French team beat Croatia to be crowned champion.

Now France will play for third place on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida. The rival will be the loser of the duel between Argentina and England. Spain, for its part, will play the final in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Robert Lewandowski joins the MLS Chicago Fire

The Polish forward signs as a franchise player and aims to be a figure in the American league.

Robert Lewandowski is already in Chicago. The Polish forward, with more than 600 goals in his career, joins the Chicago Fire of the MLS as a franchise player. His arrival marks one of the most relevant signings in the history of the Illinois club.

A historic signing

Chicago Fire coach Gregg Berhalter called the addition a key moment for the team and the league.

“This is a historic day for Chicago Fire FC, and also for the city and for MLS. I want to thank Robert for choosing Chicago. He is a huge signing for our club. Not only is he an extraordinary player, he is also an incredible person. Robert is the piece that will take us to the top,” declared the American strategist.

Lewandowski explained that his decision to leave Europe was complex, but his relationship with Barcelona played a role.

“For a few months I knew that I wanted to come here, but it took me a while to make the decision because it is something completely new for me and my family. I didn’t want to play for any other club in Europe after Barcelona; I couldn’t imagine myself in another team outside of Barcelona,” shared the Pole.

The attacker has already completed his first training session with the team after a long trip from Poland. He said he felt good and ready to adapt.

Imminent debut

Lewandowski sees potential in the Eastern Conference as a whole. “I’m here not only to play, but to help the team take a step forward on and off the field,” he said. His possible debut would be this Thursday against the Vancouver Whitecaps in the resumption of the MLS.
