Historical victory on the London grass
Jannik Sinner, world tennis number 1, defended his crown at Wimbledon. The 24-year-old Italian beat the German Alexander Zverev (29) with sets of 6-7 (7/9), 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 and 6-4 after more than three hours of play. It is his fifth Grand Slam title and second in a row at the All England Club.
“Winning again at Wimbledon is incredible. I’m also happy that it was a top-level final,” Sinner said during the ceremony. The Italian is the first tennis player from his country to win twice in this tournament.
“I have to thank my team and also my mother, who was in the stands and I saw her leave a couple of times because of the tension,” he added with a laugh.
Sinner also had a gesture of fair play: he crossed the court to assist Zverev after a fall in the third set. The German, for his part, joked: “Jannik, I don’t like you anymore… Jokes aside, he showed once again why he is the best in the world.”
Zverev’s diabetes factor
During the first set, Zverev took advantage of a break to take insulin. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 4, he uses a continuous glucose monitoring system. In 2022 he founded the ‘Alexander Zverev Foundation’ for research and support for children with diabetes.
Sinner, who also won the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome this year, achieved his 100th victory in Grand Slam tournaments. Among those in attendance were Prince William, Princess Kate, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and actors such as Dustin Hoffman and Nicole Kidman.
“After Paris we worked a lot, there were endless days. I am giving my life for this sport. Winning here twice is incredible,” Sinner acknowledged when remembering his early elimination at Roland Garros.
