Advances in Institutional Identification and Response
After the unfortunate road accident recorded on the highway that connects Mérida with Campeche, the forensic and government authorities have intensified their work to help the bereaved. The process of identification of the fatal victims has presented significant challenges due to the condition of the bodies, which has slowed down deliveries to their families. So far, the identity of five of the sixteen people who died has been confirmed, a crucial development in the midst of this tragedy.
The governor of Campeche, Layda Elena Sansores, kept citizens informed through her official channels, highlighting the inter-institutional coordination between Government Secretariats and municipal authorities. “We continue to do everything possible to contact the families of those who died in yesterday’s accident,” said the state president. Likewise, he specified that, in collaboration with the authorities of Calkiní and Yucatán, they are working tirelessly to expedite the procedures and facilitate the transfer of the remains.
Solidarity and Logistical Support for Families
For his part, the governor of Yucatán, Joaquín Díaz Mena, appeared at the facilities of the Forensic Medical Service (SEMEFO) to provide personalized attention to those affected. At this meeting, he conveyed the absolute support of his administration and guaranteed all the necessary facilities for the recognition and repatriation of the deceased to their communities of origin. The Calkiní City Council also joined these efforts, providing transportation and logistical support so that family members can travel to the city of Mérida.
The final number of victims was established at sixteen after, hours after the accident, a charred body was located inside the remains of the damaged unit. Until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, eight bodies had been delivered to their relatives once the legal identification and autopsy protocols had been completed. The complexity of this procedure lies in the conditions of the remains, which requires specialized skills and meticulous time.
Investigation of the Causes of the Accident
The Attorney General of the State of Yucatán confirmed the opening of an investigation folder to determine the exact causes of the accident. The first indications indicate that the driver of the Van-type collective taxi was traveling at excess speed, which would have caused the initial impact against a private Ford Ikon vehicle. Subsequently, the unit would have crashed into a trailer of a brewing company that was traveling in the opposite lane heading to Mérida.
The majority of the occupants of public transport were bricklayers from communities in Campeche, such as Calkiní, Becal and Nunkini, who were returning to their towns after a day’s work in the Yucatecan capital. In addition to the deceased, an injured person is reported to remain hospitalized receiving specialized medical care.
This tragic event has once again put the discussion on the table about safety in public transportation and the conditions of the roads in the region. The mobility of workers between states is frequent, so it is imperative to reinforce the supervision and maintenance protocols of the units, as well as promote permanent road awareness campaigns.
