The macabre forensic puzzle in Ciudad Juárez
It seems that in Ciudad Juárez the idea of “resting in peace” got out of hand. It turns out that, in a twist worthy of a true crime series that no one asked for, the authorities have managed to give a name and surname to 123 of the 386 people who were found at the Plenitud crematorium on June 26. Basically, it’s like having to put together the most macabre and heartbreaking puzzle in the world, but without the reference photo on the box.
Until this Friday, the combo of experts, which includes the Directorate of Expert Services and specialists in Forensic Sciences, together with the State Victim Care Center (CEAVE), has been able to notify 116 families. Imagine getting that call: “Hello, yes, we have your loved one here, in the middle of post-mortem-logistical chaos.” And the worst thing is that this continues, they promise more notifications in the next few hours because, of course, the waiting list is terrifying.
Complaints, advice and a pain that does not go away
And the judicial melodrama does not end here. Of the families that have already gone through the trauma of identification, 85 have decided not to sit idly by and have filed a complaint for fraud at the Northern Zone District Prosecutor’s Office. In other words, not only do they steal your peace of mind, but everything also smells like a scam. It is the maximum level of distrust: you can’t even be sure that they comply with the contract.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General’s Office is trying to pretend that it has everything under control and promises to continue with the identification work, in addition to offering psychological support and advice to the bereaved. Because, let’s be honest, after such a discovery, the last thing you need is for them to give you a brochure and say goodbye with a “cheer up.”
To add more fuel to the fire (pun intended), last week the family groups revealed that the Chihuahua Prosecutor’s Office signed an agreement with the Secretariat of the Interior and the National Search Commission. Basically, it’s the alliance of bureaucratic superheroes that no one knew they needed, but wish they had acted sooner. Their mission: coordinate efforts to expedite the identification of the bodies. In other words, let’s hope that with this they stop working as a government procedure and put turbo into it, because there are hundreds of families who still don’t know if their loved one is part of this horror.
